Libraries no longer require something serious and rigorous, but need a change toward user-friendly spaces to provide various kinds of interest and fun. Recently in Korea, such libraries for children have much appeared making a trend of design fit for the characteristics of children. Still, most of children’s libraries are uninteresting spaces that demands serious and quiet attitude with high and linear bookshelves and solid desks as if to be a miniature of general libraries. Unlike adults, children have different power of concentration on reading by the degree of development, with their time of concentration being under one hour. Most of the present libraries are boring and uninteresting for children who move frequently and cannot concentrate upon reading for long time. Thus, an interesting spatial device is necessary for making children stay at libraries. Play, which is for its own sake, signifies an active behavior conducted by the playing subject, an activity which includes the fun and pleasure existing only in human culture. In a space where one can read and play together, children would not recognize the library as a boring space anymore. No play as reading itself can be, it could give children interest in the space where reading and playing coexist. To make the time of reading in a library not boring, the interesting space should be provided where various activities can occur. If it is possible, it can gather the children who are now fallen in other interests such media and games.
