This paper examines Yuri Lotman’s semiotics of city, in particular his works on Saint-Petersburg which is the very site of Russian modernity and native place for Lotman himself. For Lotman, city as a special “mechanism for restoring its own past ceaselessly,” is not only a condenser but also a generator of culture which is made of various kinds of myths, world-view and ideology on a city.
As Lotman puts it, semiotics of city can be divided into two major topics: “city as a place” and “city as a name.” If the first concentrates on structural models of city-space and various mythological aspects, associated with those, the second deals with various ideologies and cultural symbolics, related with the name of city. In analysis of semiotics of Saint-Petersburg’s name, various kinds of symbolic and mythological meaning, embedded in naming of Peterburg, in particular its powerful orientation for Rome are revealed.
On the other hand, by Lotman’s special typology of city-location which is made up of dichotomy of “concentric” and “excentric” model, some typical characteristics of Saint-Petersburg such as mythologicality, illusionarity, artificiality and theoreticality.
All of these distinguishing features can be generalized into the specific historical experience of Saint-Petersburg, which has been developed in forms of radical reformation for Westernization. Lastly, this insight puts forward the problem of particularity and universality of historical experiences of Petersburg in terms of city and experience of modernity.
