After the ‘transnational turn’ in the humanities, the concept of the nation is receding as a dominant reference point for collective identity. The project of Lieux de memoire, pioneered by Pierre Nora and his colleagues, is thereby to be raised to a transnational level. The study of the ‘european sites of memory’ is one of its consequences. This essay suggests that the Rhine became one of the most important european ‘sites of memory’ since the last two centuries and regards the development of the mass tourism during the nineteenth century as its main factor.
Next to the Alps, the Rhine was the most significant destination for romantic nature appreciation in Europe. The advent of the railroads, steamships and travel guides during the nineteenth century played a key role for the growth of the Rhine tourism. A shared ‘european consciousness’ was developed which was expressed by the Rhine travellers like Friedrich Schlegel, Victor Hugo and Romain Rolland. The ‘european sites of memory’ was therefore formed ‘from below’ before the advance of the european integration during the twentieth century.
