초록· 키워드

This study is aimed to understand the urbanization process of Yongsan and determine the factors of its changes during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The basic map for this study is the original land registration map of Seoul prepared in 1914 ~ 1915, which was compared to and analyzed against the detailed topographical map issued in 1929. Yongsan played an important role as a geographical center and bridge connecting Han River to the capital city itself in distributing goods and commodities during the Joseon Dynasty. At that time, Yongsan Port was surrounded by public offices and warehouses. However, after 1900s when the Han River Iron Bridge and the Seoul-Incheon Railroad were constructed and the Han River Road was established to link the capital city to the outside, Yongsan was mutated into a new urban area where Japanese people including public officers, military officers, and civilians were mostly staying. In 1914 when the city spaces of Seoul were overhauled so that almost all the districts outside the castle should be excluded from Seoul, only Yongsan was incorporated into Seoul although it is situated south of the castle. After the opening of Yongsan Port, the Yongsan area was urbanized with a focus on the geographical north-south axle from the South Gate to Yongsan Station during the Japanese colonial regime. In other words, a linear city was formed along the streets connecting Yongsan to the capital city via major geographical points.
