This article examines the change of Dagok(rural village in Pyeongtaek) before the ‘Saemaeul Undong"(New Village Movement) through the diary of a farmer. Focucing on the parts about the ‘donghoe"(official village council) and the ‘sarangbang"(unofficial village meeting) of the diary, our study approaches the inner world of the rural village in that period.
The diary shows that the public opinion sphere of the rural village in that period was split in two. The ‘donghoe" which had existed since premodern times was led by the village seniors, and was controlled by the government administration after the military coup d"etat on May 16, 1961. On the contrary, the ‘sarangbang"(or ‘masilbang") vitalized the autonomous public opinion in rural villages around 1960. The ‘masilbang" of the young people alienated from village power functioned actively as a sphere of labour, play and communication. Gathering at the ‘masilbang", the young villagers read the newspapers, listened to the radio together. The ‘masilbang" was the place where they communicate with society.
It was filled with passion of young villagers who wanted to do something important for their local community. Holding a sports day and promoting the mutual aid culture, they tried to change the daily life of the village. When the 4.19 revolution occurred, they expressed sympathy for the demonstrators in the cities.
The young villagers led the critical opinion against the undemocratic and irrational village politics in 1960"s. With the ‘Saemaeul Undong", they elected a young village foreman and became leaders of the ‘donghoe".
Consequently, the change of the rural village during the ‘Saemaeul Undong" was not only caused by the external factor, but also by the change of agent in the rural village which had proceeded before the ‘Saemaeul Undong"
