This article is a narrative-critical reading of John 4:3-42 as an analogy of an Old Testament ‘betrothal-type’ scene by focusing on the characterization of the Samaritan woman and Jesus. The narrative format of John 4:3-42 consists of five scenes.
First, Jesus as the bridegroom finds it necessary to go through Samaria and stops at Jacob’s well in Sycar. Second, the Samaritan woman comes to get water and Jesus requests a drink. After the woman questions his request, Jesus responds by questioning her knowledge of who he is and what he represents as living water. In the third scene, Jesus then challenges her to get her husband. After which, he reveals her private life history and identity. The woman declares Jesus as a prophet, which then leads to a discussion about true worship. The woman expresses faith that the Messiah is coming. Jesus then confirms his identity as the Messiah. The fourth scene reveals the woman testifying to the Samaritan people what Jesus has done for her. The Samaritan people then go to find Jesus. Jesus and disciples discuss earthly food verse spiritual food, and time of harvest. Finally, in the fifth scene, the Samaritans believe in Jesus because of woman’s testimony. The Samaritans ask Jesus to stay with them. They proclaim Jesus as “Savior of the World.” And the spiritual betrothal is sealed.
Under the rubric of the narrative criticism, the analysis of the characterization of the Samaritan woman along with the ‘betrothal-type’ scene provides a critical and important understanding of the contextual meaning of John 4:3-42. The implied author wants the reader to see Jesus as the bridegroom at the well. However, Jesus is not getting betrothed to an individual per se, but it is through the woman at Jacob’s well that Jesus achieves a union with the Samaritan people who see Jesus as Savior of the World.
The Image of Jesus as bridegroom with multiple believers as his bride is a symbol that is not lost on the readers of John’s Gospel. The characterization of the Samaritan woman as bride is a major lens through which we see Jesus as bridegroom to seek his own people for eternal spiritual union.
