Comparative constructions are a crucial component not only in descriptive Chinese grammar but also in pedagogical grammar for learners of Chinese as a second/foreign language. They are also known to pose a serious challenge for non-native speakers, as seen in the errors commonly made by Korean learners of Chinese in producing these constructions.
There has been a vast amount of fruitful studies on the comparative constructions, with a growing pedagogical interest in the methodology of teaching them to learners of Chinese. Most of those studies, however, do not have practical implications or applications for classroom teaching, as they are theoretically oriented.
This paper investigates the comparative constructions with “更, 還, 再,” which often induce Korean learners of Chinese to make grammatical errors, as observed by the authors who have taught Chinese for many years. Based on the theory of error analysis, test-type surveys were conducted on 60 intermediate-to-advanced students in class. The findings were discussed to suggest a methodologically efficient way of educating Korean learners of Chinese on the comparative constructions.
