After the establishment of the first post-Apartheid government in 1994, the new South Africa is confronted with difficulties related to the issue of migration. In the post-Apartheid era, in particular, South Africa has been pressured to strike a balance between (illegal) immigrants and the national interests. Together with the aforementioned challenges, it is also demanded to address the gap between xenophobia/racism and the rhetoric of African Renaissance. Illuminating the focal points of migration issues in the first decade (1994-2004) of post-Apartheid South Africa, within this context, this article begins to deal with the discontinuity and continuity of migration patterns in the post-Apartheid era. Challenging the negative perspectives of South African government and society toward (illegal) migration, thereafter, it tries to search for the alternative opportunities and possibilities for South Africa in dealing with the issue of migration in the post-Apartheid era.
