Literature of one era is not natural product created in a flow of time, but a document of struggles in which an author would give an insight into social issues of his contemporary era in acute literary pursuit of reality and thereby communicate them to reader. Author Cho Sae-hee defines 1970"s as an era in which ‘evil" was boldly dis-guised as ‘good." In those days, South Koreans enjoyed economic abundance owing to rapid industrial growth, but were subject to grim control of military dictatorship in political aspect. Besides, good values were reversed with evil ones due to regional and occupational in-equality and disparity. It was an era in which interclass conflicts and confrontation went worse under the influence of scorn and oppression in both political and economical aspect. For this period, author Cho suggested that social members suffer from agony and irrationality due to absurdity of their contemporary era, so it is required to publicly discuss wrong circumstances and negative realities inherent in the era in the interest of seeking possible solutions.
The consecutive publications of “The Ball Shot by a Midget” , a series novel of Cho, in mid and late 1970’s are unrelated to realities of the time. And it is ‘fantasy" that this series work suggests so as to overcome those realities. In general, fantasy is unreal world, but paradoxically, it allows us to consider what the reality is all about and reveal the nitty gritty of realty. That is why the fantasy in “The Ball Shot by Midget” makes realities hidden in 1970’s shown unfamiliar in its external aspect, while making us recognize solid aspects of reality and revealing modified appearance of oppressed desires. So the fantasy does not work independently from realities in 1970’s but interacts with the latter. Internally, the fantasy emphasizes reality in the miserable life of midget generation and class-oriented group characters are based on realities, which indicates that realty and fantasy coexists with each other in one framework, not confronts each other as independent element. The alienation-phenomenon in Cho"s novel works is different from absurd delusion or imagination far from realities, and is also characterized by stepping up awareness of realities in 1970"s.
