After postcolonialism, nationalism has been criticized for its ‘local’ tendencies and essentialism. Postcolonialism reflects the features of globalism such as free migration across nations and cultural exchanges, and focuses on the multicultural phenomena. It deconstructs logocentrism, phallocentrism, and eurocentrism in the western way of thinking, emphasizing cultural hybridity and diversity. Diaspora, for instance, makes a good example of disagreement between nationalist identity as a single, pure, and homogeneous entity and its actual global, multicultural existentiality.
The postcolonial criticism on nationalism, however, may be proper for western nationalism, but not for native nationalism of the third world. Native nationalism investigates ‘partisan universality,’ fighting against colonialism, criticising western universality which is set up on the colonial civilization. In the meanwhile, it intervenes in the social ‘antagonistic’ relations to help other social movements such as class struggle and gender trouble etc.
Nationalism, according to Slavoj ?i?ek, is an ‘empty signifier’ whose meaning can be changed in accordance with the relationship among subjects in the Symbolic Order. In the era of global capitalism or neo-liberalism in which the tendency to the market society and world market gets more and more dominant, nationalism means not an old-fashioned, out-of-date relic of the past, but an effective weapon with which all nations of the third world build solidarity and cooperation.
