This paper tries to analyze both the meanings and the meaning extensions of Japanese verb ‘ireru’, which represents, in a multiple manner, both the effect from the outside and the movement toward the inside, and Korean verb ‘neotda’, which corresponds the best to ‘ireru’. Seeing that these verbs are polysemies in the meaning extension of which figures of speech get involved, this paper examined the similarities and differences and others through a semantic contrast of these Japanese and Korean verbs, by considering how the meaning extensions develop by means of figures of speech. ‘Ireru’ is classified into the movement of concrete things, the movement by means of instruments, the movements of abstract things and others, and ‘neotda’ is classified and extended into the movement of concrete things, the movement of scales, the movement of abstract things and others. ‘Ireru’ and ‘neotda’ alike reveal metaphors by points of similarity, temporal proximities, causal relationships and the extensions by means of figures of speech like metonymy based on instrumental or purposive relations. Schematizing the aspects of meaning extension in ‘ireru’ and ‘neotda’ shows that ‘ireru’ has more semantic domains and many usages used within the same semantic domain. Judging from this, the Japanese polysemy ‘ireru’ has more wider semantic domain than the Korean ‘neotda’ and also corresponds to some related meanings other than ‘neotda’, and this analysis of those two verbs’ meanings and the meaning extensions will contribute to minimizing misuses in vocabulary among learners of Japanese and those of Korean who are not native speakers in their learning languages.
