In the 1960s, a group of scholars of historical demography and ‘new social history’ inspired a historical study of families in Europe. They examined ‘European Marriage Patterns’ of the early modern age and concluded that there was a ‘peculiarity’ of the ‘Western’ family. This ‘peculiarity’ included a high average age of marriage, a high proportion of people who never married, and a nuclear family, all of which were regarded as being enduring and fundamental characteristics of the Western family system. This concept needed to be revised in subsequent studies which empirically confirmed regional differences in household formation characteristics, even within Western Europe. Another approach focusing on the qualitative dimension of family life, e.g. social attitude and sentiments, involved a study of French and Anglo-American social history and involved social anthropological and socio-legal perspectives. Other historians considered the family as a social structure and examined the ‘missing link’ between individuals and social changes. Their focus was on the various forms of the family structure since industrialization and urbanization, especially in relation to labor and working class families. The social history of the family continued to be enriched by oral history, micro-histories and gender history. We can say that the historical approaches to studying the family in Europe helps us to understand the origins of the nuclear family in the modern age. Cross-cultural research is necessary to understand family history as social history and how similar social forces affect people in various societies in different ways.
