In many plays of August Wilson, at least one character possesses physical scars on the body. This paper focuses on Risa, a female character appearing in Two Trains Running. Risa is described to have 15 self-inflicted scars on her legs, and through the mouth of another character in the play, a stage direction, and statements in interviews, Wilson leads us to expect Risa’s scars to be the signifier of her attempt at self-definition and challenge to the black male’s sexual objectification of the female body. The paper argues that this expectation is not met for three reasons: Risa’s role as a waitress at a restaurant owned by a patriarchal figure, her devotion to a preacher who seems to be a charlatan, and her response to a male character’s sexual approach. The paper ends with a discussion of implications this finding has.
