From the beginning of its history, the U. S. has been a multi-ethnic nation composed of immigrants from all of the world. Its ruling elite have tried ‘to Americanize’ them into one by the banner of ‘E Pluribus Unum’, that is, ‘One Out of Many.’ For the government, the English language seemed to be a means to unite all the citizens of various ethnic and cultural origins.
The ‘culture war’ between multiculturalists and monoculturalists has been fought in America for a long time. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th American president, was one of the politicians who try to repudiate the other cultures and languages and to prohibit non-English speakers from voting. Only by one language, he thought, can America be united to one great nation. Likewise, Samuel Huntington believes that advocates of multiculturalism and diversity are kinds of anti-western ideologues. His arguments seem to force immigrants or aliens to learn English and to be assimilated into the culture of WASP.
This paper makes a general survey of the phases of the culture war between the American intellectuals since the 1980s, and tries to explain the monoculturalist arguments to be a replica of that of Roosevelt. In this sense, Henry James was more open than his
contemporaries including Roosevelt who criticized severely the novelist.
