This paper explores the meaning of the Korean slogan Opwun mence kalyeta osipnyen mence kanta ‘one would leave the world 50 years earlier if he tries to go 5 minutes earlier,’ which urges drivers and pedestrians to observe traffic laws. This paper ponders on semantic contributions that individual constructs of the slogan make such as mence ka-‘go earlier’ and the adversative desiderative construction X?lyeta Y-hata ‘tries to X, but does Y.’ The construal of the slogan involves emergent semantics such as the reversed intentional structure; this cannot be accounted for only in terms of the meanings of individual elements of the slogan. To account for the emergent structure, this paper models the slogan’s conceptual structure, whose construal involves metaphoric blends, within conceptual blending theory.
