This study shows how pro-Taiwan group in the Japanese conservative party was formed in the post war period. Previous studies discussed pro-Taiwan group of the Liberal Democratic Party(LDP) in the period following the 1st Sino-Japan Cooperation Committee in 1957, didn’t examine the activity of pro-Taiwan group before the LDP formation of a party. This paper focuses on five years from the just after the effect of the San Francisco Peace Treaty to the 1st Sino-Japan cooperation Committee and shows the historical origin of pro-Taiwan group LDP.
In the middle of 1950s, the exponent of pro-Taiwan group in conservative government was Taketora Ogata and Banboku Ono of the Liberal Party. Ogata who was a political successor of Shigeru Yoshida was the first influential conservative politician who visited Taiwan and talked with Chiang Kai-shek. Since his visit to Taiwan Ogata took the role of contact with Nationalist China in the Yoshida Administration. When Ogata died suddenly in January 1956, Mitsujiro Ishii succeeded his role and led to organize the 1st Sino-Japan cooperation Committee. On the other hand, Ono played a key role of the diet member"s diplomatic exchange because he has a subordinate having connection with Nationalist China. Although the Asian anti-communism comrade society led by the Ono group did not realize, Naka Funada who supported Ono faction participated in the Sino-Japan cooperation Committee afterwards. Funada also took the role of contact with Nationalist China in place of Ono who does not have the knowledge of the foreign policy.
As for the remarkable characteristic of the pro-Taiwan group of 1950’s, conservative politicians were various for the ideology and did not necessarily agree with Nationalist China on the method of the anticommunism. Taketora Ogata thought about cooperation with Nationalist China from the viewpoint of Pan-Asianism. In addition, quite a number of person who participated in Sino-Japan cooperation Committee had duty experience in Taiwan before the World War II. As for what was important, it did not necessarily mean clear ‘anti-China (People’s Republic of China)’ to belong to the pro-Taiwan group until the middle of 1950s. It is after 1958 that the opposition of a pro-Taiwan group and the pro-China group becomes rapid progress. The activity of the pro-Taiwan group of 1950’s is placed as prehistory that ideology opposition in the LDP gets more serious.
