This article is a theoretical approach to the rise of the social in the transition to the long twentieth century, especially paying attention to the works by, G. W. F. Hegel, E. Durkheim, K. Polanyi, and J. Donzelot. The key question is ‘Do we have new idea about the social beyond the opposition between Gesellschaft and Gemeinschaft?’ To seek answer to this question, the article discusses the thoughts on the competing forms of the social which had been risen from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, considering its historical conditions. Based on this discussion, the article seeks some implications for East Asian Societies.
