This study examined the use of four cues (vowel duration, F1 offset frequency, closure voicing, and closure duration) to the voicing contrast in the production of English word-final stops by Korean learners of English and native English speakers. The experiment revealed that vowel duration, F1 offset frequency and closure voicing of the Korean speakers significantly differed from those of native English speakers. The Korean speakers’ use of closure duration, on the other hand, approached the target acoustic norm. The findings were in line with the prediction that English voiced and voiceless stops are classified equivalent to Korean plain and aspirated stops respectively. Also, the findings revealed that acoustic cues that are not phonemically relevant for contrasts in the L1 are difficult to learn. The results suggest that Korean learners of English may identify English word-final stops with Korean non-final stops, and that the extent to which they exploit the acoustic cues to the voicing contrast in English word-final stops may be influenced by the relevance of the cues in distinguishing L1 stops.
