This article examines the lineages and marriages of the translators (K. Eoyeokgwan譯官) who accompanied the Tongsinsa (通信使) envoy and conducted the Munuihaeng missions (問慰行) in the late Joseon period. This is the first study on these issues. The results are, first, the members of the translators were confirmed, and documents written by them and materials compiled from complementary sources mentioning them in the Sangwon gwabang (象院科榜) are presented. Second, through research on how they maintained their specialty after passing the japgwa examination (雜科) and the fact many Japanese-language (Oehak 倭學) translators became Eoyeokgwan translators who accompanied the Tongsinsa and conducted Munuihaeng missions, the Joseon government made Japanese-language translators elites among interpreters. Third, through analysis of the social positions of their lineages and features from generation to generation, the Eoyeokgwan translators confirmed the phenomenon of meritorious families. It was known that not only one’s family but also one’s ability were regarded as qualifications to be translators. Fourth, this article shows the formation of meritorious families made not only through blood relations but also through marriage relations in jungin (中人) society in the late Joseon period.
