The sharing economy has emerged as a worldwide trend in an effort to find a solution to problems emerging in the course of urbanization and industrialization, such as environmental pollution and collapse of community.
Since the launch of Seoul Innovation Bureau in January 2012, Seoul Metropolitan Government(SMG) has earnestly promoted policies concerning the Sharing City of SMG to address the economic, social, and environmental problems of the city.
Policies concerning the Sharing City of SMG are divided into two categories: one focuses on the formation of the basis for sharing, provision of support for voluntary sharing activities carried out in the private sectors, and development of an ecosystem; the other focuses on sharing resources owned by SMG with the people and pursuing exemplary sharing projects.
First of all, SMG enacted the Municipal Ordinance for the Promotion of Sharing and launched the Sharing Promotion Committee. It also opened the Sharing Hub for the collection of information on sharing which is providing support so that the idea of sharing takes root locally through village community programs. SMG adopted sharing-related BI and slogan through people’s participation to disseminate the idea widely. The City is designating as sharing organizations and businesses those interested in solving social problems through sharing, allowing them to use the brand identity (BI) and providing them with administrative support including marketing and financial support such as program-related expenses, in addition to support associated with startups specializing in sharing. It also held related events, such as Seoul Meets Sharing Economy, international conferences, and expo.
SMG is sharing public office buildings and municipal data with people. It also implements model projects such as car sharing, home stay, local exchange and trading campaign and generation-wide room sharing designed to encourage young people and senior citizens to share residences, etc.
