In order to investigate Korean perception of English posterior obstruents differing in prosodic position, 42 native Korean speakers participated in a perception experiment composed of identification task and English-to-Korean mapping task with confidence ratings. Results indicated that correct identification rate was significantly affected by factors such as prosodic position, voicing and manner features of the targets, and confidence rating. Specifically, the proportions of correct identification were high in acoustically salient locations like onset and intervocalic position before stress compared to weak locations like coda and intervocalic position after stress. Also, accuracy rates of stops tended to be higher than those of fricatives and affricates. Voiceless consonants were easier to identify than voiced counterparts, except stops. Importantly, there was a significant interaction between voicing and manner, resulting in low accuracy rates for the voiced fricative and affricate, /?/and /?/. Further, there was a significant positive correlation between accuracy and confidence ratings across position so that the accuracy rates were low for the targets with low confidence ratings like /?/ and /?/. Finally, it was shown that identification accuracy and English-to-Korean mapping patterns were related in such a way that more diverse mappings lead to more confusions in identification and low proportions of the most salient categories in English-to-Korean mapping induced low identification accuracy rates. In addition, perceptual intervocalic voicing and devoicing were attested in intervocalic position and final (and initial) position, respectively.
