The early Taoism pursued to become a transcendental person through Waidan or external elixir thought which consider that taking alchemically treated unchangeable Jin’s attribute with attain long and immortal life. However, A harmful consequences caused by its side effects were occurred continuously, so that new practice methodology was required to pursue. It was the reason to shift importance from Waidan to Neidan.
The aim of Neidan practice is also the fundamental goal of Taoism, long and immoral life, and becoming transcendental being through enlightening on Dao. Taoist thought had grounded as the basis of practice system in specification process of its methodology. Comparing to Confucianism and Buddhism, Taoisem could not developed elaborate and detailed philosophical theory, but it had developed the aspect of practice in very minute degree, which are the difference to the former two.
In the Neidan practice methodology, the process of Dan refining by abreast practice of both nature and life has been transmitted with change and derivation into various theories and practice methodologies in accordance with sects.
Neidan considers Jing, Qi, Shen (精氣神) as the fundamental elements constituting a human natural life. Jing is the basic material element constituting and maintaining natural life. It converts to Qi, and Qi converts to Shen under certain conditions.
There are also two reasons that we should take the "Joocheon" practice in the course of Neidan practice. One is to make pathways because Joocheon is the pathway to bring out the energy from the cosmos. The other is to free oneself from the restriction of body by the ’body practice’.
So Neidan tries to have a direct access to the mind and body of human-beings. and to confirm the real aspects of them and fully realize them. To forget the body thoroughly is the main purpose of the body practice in Neidan study. Actually what we can learn from the teachings of Neidan practice is that we should understand what human-being is and fully understand his capability.
