This essay explores the origins and aspects of Italian populism, and focuses on fascist populism and so-called ‘postmodern’ populism. Populism, as “an ideology which pits a virtuous and homogeneous people against a set of elites and dangerous ‘others’ who are together depicted as depriving the sovereign people of their rights, values, prosperity, identity and voice”, has played a key role in contemporary Italian politics. This essay asks, “What is the discursive backyards which made Italian populism so powerful and how the specific nature of Italian populism can be perceived?”. To answer these questions, this essay suggests the following. First, underlying Italian populism which puts emphasis on the critics of political class is the search for normality based on the feeling that Italy is ‘not a normal country’, in other words, the aspirations for a ‘normal country’. Second, in Italian populism, prominent are the authoritarian aspects in spite of some democratic potentials. And yet, contemporary Italian populism must be evaluated in terms of the cultural hegemony which is born from popular values accumulated over a long time in a specific social context beyond the dichotomy between dictatorship and democracy.
