Baekje goes through a political turmoil around the 5th and 6th centuries. In A.D. 475, the capital of Baekje located in the Seoul area was captured by Goguryeo and Baekje had to move its captial to Gongju. This incident came as a shock to not only Baekje but also its neighboring countries such as the Southern Dynasties of China, Kaya and Wa. The transnational trading system of East Asia which was centered upon Baekje encountered a crisis situation.
Meanwhile, a drastic change occurs in the tomb styles in Baekje around A.D. 500. For instance, foreign tomb styles were adopted in both central and rural areas and the tomb styles from the central area became common in rural areas. Considering the international circumstances at the time, these changes did not happen by mere coincidence. Rather, they represent the new policy pursued by the central government of Baekje to overcome the political crisis the country was facing.
The drastic change in the tomb styles of Baekje reflects the political interactions that existed at the time in two levels - domestically, between the central and rural areas of Baekje, and internationally, between Baekje and the Southern Dynasties of Chin aㆍWaㆍKaya. In other words, the foreign tomb styles found in Baekje can be interpreted as representing the diplomatic strategy attempted by the central government of Baekje, consolidating its amicable relationship with the Southern Dynasties of ChinaㆍWaㆍKaya in order to fight against Goguryeo.
The fact that the tomb styles of the central area were commonly adopted in the ruralareas can be understood in line with the national policy implemented by the central government of Baekje to strengthen the unity within the country.
