This paper presents a critical discourse analysis of news reports related to immigrants (migrant workers and immigrant wives) in Korean society, which has been changed to a ‘multicultural society’. This analysis follows van Dijk’s ideological square theory and Fairclough’s framework based on the systemic functional grammar of Halliday, which focuses on the choices of language. I suggest that Koreans’ ideology toward immigrants is produced and re-produced in news reports through the selective and strategic use of language. Korean society is apparently trying to achieve a ‘multicultural society’, but Koreans tend to recognize the members of the society from other countries or cultures as “they-group” rather than “we-group”. Finally, the paper discusses the ‘Advanced State Discourse’, in which Koreans’ perception of their country as ‘advanced’or ‘developed’ as opposed to other Asian countries as ‘developing countries’explains the “otherness” depicted in South Korean news reports.
