With increased interests in design in recent years, design practices began to be assessed by measures for ethics both inside and outside the design community. Ethical approaches to design date back to the 1970s; then it was only a matter of design professionals. Yet, it indeed was during this period that the ethics of design and designers arose as a subject of concern. Hence, the recent interests in design ethics can be viewed in this historical context and as a matter that has been expanded to become a public issue by being conflated with enhanced social responsibilities of design.
It is necessary to pay attention to this phenomenon because it reflects changing social demands of design. In other words, major criteria of design assessment have shifted from industrial qualities?suggesting new life styles, increasing productivity and product value?to ethical qualities. Accordingly, a majority of design discourses are now based on cultural or anthropological researches including Human-centered Design rather than scientific researches such as design methodologies or design semantics. On the one hand, these changes provide us with a ground upon which to discuss design as a cultural and/or social practice. On the other hand, such tendency makes a negative impact on designers, by suppressing a potential active movement of the design community to engage with social issues. Furthermore, this could provoke the internalization and de-politicization of design, thereby limiting the design practice to an act of charity e.g. helping the third world countries or Talent Donation. Thus, it is required to examine the socio-cultural background of ethical assessment of design and to make a critical analysis of the meanings/implications of ethical criteria in contemporary design.
