This study deals with some policy-improvement issues for strengthening the global competitiveness of the fundamental manufacturing industry (Ppuri Industry). We focus on technological competitiveness, among others. First, we review the concept and current state of the fundamental manufacturing industry in Korea. We then review and evaluate the progress of fundamental manufacturing industry-support policies and works, and examine the first promotion basic plan and the 2013 promotion action plan for the fundamental manufacturing industry. Based on these, we suggest the following four policy-improvement issues. First, it should be clarified what the term "fundamental manufacturing enterprise" imply, when used by the government, in particular. Second, the policy target group should be expanded to include medium enterprises. Third, the designated requisites for the fundamental manufacturing technology-specialized enterprise should be rather relaxed. Lastly, the policy should support the establishment of the foundation for the accompanied growth in the fundamental manufacturing industry.
