Constructing positive attributes for body to replace the traditional negative attributes can open up real possibilites for Korean young women and give them direction as they face the conflict between their inner and outer voices.
Even if they give up the fight and retreat to their old selves and the old understandings of body, the attempt to overcome can in itself change women’s natures. The process of reconstructing the attributes of body is also a process of reorganizing their inner world as well as redefining the existing reality of the past and present. They are not likely to return to exactly where they were before, at least not with the same intensity of body image. The process of reconstructing image of body also involves reconstructing images of self.
Even though their unconscious and conscious collective resistance is not often allowed to surface and their possibilities for different kinds of faith in body, their faith of image of God does not die. Even when women are overwhelmed by their reality and shrunken by physical and psychological disturbance, they seem to want to tell the truth of their experience. Even when faced with the abusive power of hierarchy, women can whisper the truth. Even their silent voices cry out as they continue to seek their God.
Each day I still struggle to remember I face. And I find myself to be a beautiful woman that God has created and pronounced to be good. Healing one’s self is not a one-time event or a miracle. As a women, we struggle every day of our life to rediscover the astounding courage, power, and faith that lie within. As a Korean women we are emerging from a painful but honorable past. Each day we seek a more clear future. We believe that we can be part of image of God and our body represents it. We trust that God is and will be with us during this journey, encouraging and sharing God"s vision of what is means to live in this world.
