This paper is to review the recent Korean scholarship published during the past two years (2011~2012) in the field of ancient western history. My specific goal is to critically summarize the recent articles and books that pertain to the history of the Orient, ancient Greece and Rome. Hopefully, this will provide a fine overview of the results of research. I am also trying to indicate or to see some issues, problems, and prospects.
Thanks to many scholars" hardworking, publications have been quite prolific. I would like to title the whole trend of the scholarship during these years as “diversity and maturity”, because it appears that many of the works have improved both in quantity and in quality. In the field of ancient history, the need of interdisciplinary cooperation becomes great: philology, literature, demography, art, and psychology, etc. need to work together for the profound understanding of the ancient society. Fortunately, the past two years" progress on the interdisciplinary perspectives has been rapid, and this kind of publication has been diverse and voluminous. Besides, it seems that a significant shift has begun to take place in scholarship: the shift from an emphasis on political history to cultural history is evident, though political history is still prominent, especially in the Roman history. Lastly, the point should not be omitted that it is highly recommended to develop one"s own theory and originality through digging into the original texts and documents with more eagerness.
