While the interconnectedness of global economies have been increasing due to vertical specialization, this study attempts to analyze the economic impacts of the Korean water transport sector using the global multiregional input-output analysis. Through the global multiregional input-output table in the WIOD project for the year 2009, this study explores the production-inducing effects and supply shortage effects of the Korean water transport sector, paying particular attention to the interrelations between countries, considering the sector as exogenous specification. Analysis results reveal that the production-inducing effects of a 1.0 KRW change in water transport output are larger in the petroleum and chemical sectors and auxiliary transport activities than in other sectors. Furthermore, the Korean water transport plays a significant role as intermediate goods in production processes of foreign countries. The present study is distinctly different from previous literatures in that the analysis results entail measures to quantify the roles of the water transport sector as the exports of intermediate services. Finally, these findings will contribute to helping in formulating the policy on the development of the Korean water transport sector.
