The space where manufacturing left has been filled with post-modern industries like culture. The purpose of this study is to analyze the industrial structure of Incheon to examine what trends it reveals, using location quotient analysis. Incheon city is regarded as a thriving city though it was traditionally regarded as a typical industrial city. This mixed image raises the question of what kind of development trend this city shows and what drives the city’s development. Several new possibilities for development range from the growth machine to traditional land development to amenity and cultural development. Incheon’s overall industrial structure has been understudied, except with respect to particular industries. Manufacturing came to dominate Incheon industrial development through the 1908s, though it has receded. Even as manufacturing is in decline, it is still strong, however. The density of manufacturing establishments has increased even as employment has declined. The industries that are on the move include transportation, including the port and airport, and business services, as well as arts and sports and recreation. All of these three areas have surged forward in density, both in terms of the number of establishments and the number of workers when compared to the national average. Incheon appears to be managing. a deft and gradual transition to a new economy that is more attractive in environmental and quality of life terms, even as it will likely retain a significant manufacturing component for the long-term future.
