It has become routine in everyday life, to encounter with what “unfamiliar” is. We live every moment contacting with strange objects in our residence, work places and market. Indeed, it is not difficult in our surroundings to find the families with whose members foreigners are. All this shows it eloquently why we should have “intercultural competence.” This “intercultural competence” is to be raised in the way of “intercultural learning.”
In this study, the concrete methodology of “intercultural learning” is to be reviewed. What is “intercultural learning” and what is its purpose? In order to realize such purpose, what criteria we should consider? By answering these questions, we are one step closer to the finding and development of materials and a guide book for intercultural learning to reflect global perspectives.
We explore in particular the principles, which Council of Europe and European Commission developed. The Intercultural Learning Tool-kit emphasizes the principles as such “Confidence and Respect,” “Experiencing Identity,” “Constructed Realities” and “Dialogue with the Other” etc. For example, building up confidence is a cornerstone of intercultural learning in order to achieve the openness necessary for a mutual process, and trying to understand ourselves, our own identity, is a prerequisite to encounter.
