Percy Bysshe Shelley, as one of the major Romantic poets, has been said to be most readily related to atheism. His pamphlet in 1811, “The Necessity of Atheism” reflects the views of John Locke and David Hume. No critical agreement that Shelley takes a new direction away from Godwinian rationalism has yet been reached. He keeps himself aloof from the radical enlightenment. He endeavors to sever connections between atheism and freethought. His atheism reflected on “Mont Blanc” implies freedom from the bygone days characterized by lack of creativity.
His romantic inclination suggests that such “atheism” as any issue with religious nuances can be a strategy to make his original intention irrelevant and marginal. To regard his romanticism as simply speculating non-belief is to underrate his literary and critical capacities. As Earl Wasserman’s reading of “Mont Blanc” shows, the gist of Shelley remains implicitly religious. This study elaborates upon the fact that Shelley’s signature on the lodging registry as “atheist” can be associated with one of the implications Christianity escorts into his age. Awed by sublime objects in the vale of Chamonix, his mind cannot but be the empty space of nothingness and non-belief. His declaration by signing himself as “atheist” is to express his philosophical conviction and obtain his power to celebrate the vacancy of “Mont Blanc”.
