『Taketori monogatari』is the fantasy novel which primarily details conflicts and negotiations between ‘the moon world’ and ‘human world.’ Hence, the most important thing in studying the literature is to grasp the meaning of ‘the moon’ in the work.
This thesis was written based on that perspective. The principal ideas can be summarized as follows. First, the phrase the harvest moon in the work reflects not Japanese ancient tradition but the influence of Chinese culture which is to appreciate the moon in the night. Second, the moon world in the work is more like paradise which was added Shintoism and Taoism to the belief in the pure land. Third, the taboo on staring the moon in the work was not passed down from neither Japanese ancient folk beliefs nor China, but was the reflection of author’s experience of lunar eclipse. Fourth, it is considered that the idea of moon being related to women was not first introduced in the Heian period.
