This thesis aims to analyze The Freedom of the City focusing on the confederacy among state apparatuses and their public discourses that distort and exaggerate the experienced reality of the disprivileged citizens in Derry―Skinner, Lily, and Michael―and their violent impacts on them. Many readings of this play tend to oversimplify it as a Nationalist political play by regarding it solely as a product of a historical event of Bloody Sunday. However, it is revealed that Brian Friel broadens his scope by approaching the broader issues of authority or power―political, judicial, moral―and its discourses in the context of Northern Ireland’s social, political, and cultural issues, and reveals how language and discourse manipulate and destroy individuals.
The empowered figures in this play, those ‘outside’ the Guildhall, seek to manage ideological discourse. In a sense, the discourses of those figures rather than the figures themselves are the real protagonists of this play. On the other hand, three victims, those ‘inside’ the Guildhall, appear as hapless victims of the discourses of power. The various official discourses of the empowered frame the activities of the hapless trio in the mayor’s parlor, determine the course of their lives, and collaborate to snuff out that existence to suit their purpose. As a result, the trio become the casuality of language and also fall victim to political, social, economic and judicial injustice of greater force in Northern Ireland.
The public discourses represented by a Judge, Soldiers, Police Constable, Brigadier, Army Press Officer, Forensic Expert, Pathologist, Priest, Balladeer, TV news commentator, and a sociologist Dr. Dodds, seem to be ideologically disparate, yet they reveal their mutual confederacy. They assume allegiance to the British government or other forces that implicitly take its side. And even those that seem to sympathize with the Irish victims also show allegiance to the British power. They all foster the official view and elevate the level of fear with exaggeration and distortion.
