This paper is to find an answer to the question why the verb ??? modifies the four objects in Ex 20:18a. Two objects are visual, but the other two objects are aural. MT does not have the verb which can modifies the aural objects(the voices and the sound of the trumpet). In the history of scholarship, the most of the people regarded this as an example of zeugma. However, I have tried to find the specific reason for this phenomenon by comparing the crucial studies and by analyzing the MT, LXX, English translations and Korean translations.
Cassuto, Noth, Childs, Propp, Houtman, and Dozeman shared a certain aspect in analyzing the text of Ex 20:18a. Most of them are satisfied with the notion of zeugma and suggest some possibilities. I have focused on the visual and the aural elements in the Hebrew Bible. The visual aspect can cover the aural aspect in terms of YHWH’s theophany at Mt. Sinai. The word ‘sounds’( ???? ) can be a voice of YHWH who is speaking to the people of Israel. When they heard this voice of God at the bottom of Mt. Sinai, they could perceive the theophany of YHWH. This means that they could see YHWH himself by hearing the sound. Because they could not see the face of YHWH in any cases, the text depicts this situation by using the verb ??? in order to modify the auditory objects in v. 18a.
This study shows that the literary style of zeugma cannot explain the specific case of v. 18a in Exodus. The visual understanding of aural element is the most appropriate way of explaining the conflicting usage of visual verb with aural objects. The image of speaking YHWH is depicted by using the verb ??? instead of using other aural verbs. In this sense hearing YHWH is equal to seeing YHWH who is speaking to the people of Israel.
