Mary Magdalene got more higher position from the second half of the 1st century to the 2nd century. This paper tried to investigate the reason why this change happened, and to find the historical reality of Mary Magdalene. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained.
The descriptions on the acts of Mary Magdalene of the Gospel of Mark and the Epistle to Romans were based on not the anti-feminism but the their theology. The Gospel of Mark intended to veil the fact that Jesus was Messiah. And Paul did not have a negative stance against women. Therefore there is no reason to doubt the verity of the descriptions on the acts of Mary Magdalene of the Gospel of Mark and the Epistle to Romans.
The reason of the heightening of the position of Mary Magdalene in the texts which were written after the Gospel of Mark is the rivalry among communities which followed Peter, John, Mary Magdalene. As the Church of Jerusalem disappeared, the believers who opposed the followers of Peter wanted to heighten the position of Mary Magdalene. The authors of the Gospel of John and the texts of Gnosticism had this intention. Therefore, the core reason of the change of position of Mary Magdalene is not anti feminism but the rivalry of the believers.
