This study empirically evaluates the effects of environmental regulation violation on performance in long-term point of view.
The major findings of this study are as follows: first, our test assesses the association between the propensity of regulation violation and performances(ROA and Tobin-Q) for the total sample. Our results indicate a negative relationship between the propensity of regulation violation and performances(ROA and Tobin-Q), respectively. This implies that firms associated with regulation violation experience a difficulty in operating business than firms not associated with regulation violation. Secondly, our test assesses the association between the degree of government actions from environmental regulation violation and performances(ROA and Tobin-Q) for the regulation violation sample. Our result demonstrates a negative relationship between the degree of government actions from environmental regulation violation and firm value. The analysis indicates that the firms associated with the government actions for regulation violation (prosecution, penalty, temporary shutdown, shutdown, and ban to use specific equipment) experience a decrease in firm value.
