The integration of artistic studies has followed the development of various technologies; thus, there are an increasing number of artistic areas in which a variety of expressions and senses are being applied. However, in terms of aesthetics, an academic base for augmented reality has not yet been firmly established as it has been for other digital media. In this study, a comparative analysis of images represented in augmented reality was conducted in the context of the characteristics of surrealist painting. To capture the correlation between the two media, the concept of media aesthetics was applied. This investigation of the surreal aesthetics of augmented reality is expected to be significant in identifying the flow of modern art and effectively helping to commercialize this technology and supplement its weaknesses.
