The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between compressive and diametral tensile strength of the resin-modified glass ionomer cements improving the mechanical characteristics of conventional glass ionomers and their bonding strength to the dental casting alloys. Four different kinds of resin-modified glass ionomer cements, such as FujiPLUS(GC), FujiCEM(GC), Vitremer(3M) and ProTecCEM(Ivoclar vivadent) were prepared to measure their compressive strengths(6mm in diameter and 12mm high) and diametral tensile strengths(6mm in diameter and 3mm thick). Sample size for each groups was 20. The precious alloys of Cast-2(Alphadent,Korea) and the nonprecious metals of Unimetal-II(Shofu,Japan) were selected to determine shear bond strength to the cement specimens 24h after preparation. Sample size for each groups was 20. The data obtained from the tests for shear bond strength, compressive strength and diametral tensile strength were statistically compared. The differences of shear bond strength between the precious and the nonprecious alloy were also analyzed for comparison. The conclusions were as follows;1. The type of cements containing higher compressive strength showed higher diametral tensile strength(p<0.05).2. The kind of cements with higher mechanical strength showed also higher shear bond strength to the precious alloy.3. Mechanical strength of the tested cements was not correlated with shear bond strength to the nonprecious alloy.4. Shear bond strengths of FujiPLUS and FujiCEM to the nonprecious alloy were remarkably higher than those to the precious alloy(p<0.05), whereas shear bond strength of ProTecCEM to the nonprecious alloy was a slightly higher than that to the precious alloy(p<0.05). However, Vitremer showed no difference of shear bond strength between the precious and the nonprecious alloys.
