This study presents an analysis of structural changes to the Japanese community in Busan between 1876 and 1880 with a focus on the activities of the Tsushima people to raise a need to analyze the national integration process of the Japanese people that took place in the Japanese community in Busan during the same period.
The Japanese population in Busan was not even 100 right after Busan opened its ports in 1876. It, however, gradually grew and reached the mark of about 2,000 in 1880. The study classified the Japanese residents in Busan until 1888 and found out that a majority of them came from Tsushima. The Japanese community of Busan had conflicts between those from Tsushima and those from other regions and even witnessed violent incidents. During those days, the Tsushima people gathered together around the traditional feudal clan and protected themselves. One of the representative organizations was the gathering of people from the same hometown formed among the entire residents from Tsushima in Busan. They built a shrine to worship the first lord of Tsushima, held commemorative ceremonies, and strengthened the solidarity among the people from the same hometown of Tsushima. The formation of such a gathering was a phenomenon that emerged in the process of modern Japan becoming a nation-state.
