This paper is aimed at analyzing the preposition stranding and pied?piping in French PP?constructions in comparison with English counterparts. By re?verifying the proposed alternatives in the previous studies, we will derive several problems from them and propose the following analytic results. In French PP?constructions, differently from the English counterparts, a preposition strongly manifests binding capacity with the following DP. That means the paraphrasing, such as pronominalization, single neuter?pronominalization and a single interrogative, can be operated relatively freely. In particular, if we expand, on a syntactic basis, the argument of Kayne(1984) based on a lexical perspective, we can conclude that the DP complement of a PP?phase itself is prohibited from being moved out of the phase, conforming to PIC, because PPs in French form some kind of strong phase like CP or v*P. Finally, the phasehood of PPs in French will be a subject of our foreseeable future research.
