This paper presents a syntactic analysis of Korean cleft constructions. Previous studies on clefts can be divided into two groups; one is a base-generation approach (Hoji 1990, Sohn 2001, Kizu 2005, Kang 2006, etc.) and the other is a movement approach (Hiraiwa & Ishihara 2002, Kim & Lee 2008, Choi 2011, etc.). Both approaches, however, are found to have problems in accounting for restrictions of NPI or structural case in Korean clefts. This paper presents an alternative analysis for Korean cleft, according to which a focus constituent, which precedes ita ‘be’, is adjoined to a null CP. A semantic interpretation of the null CP is restored by copying its antecedent topic CP at LF. Given the discussions that there exist ellipsis constructions in Korean which involve PF-deletion such as fragments (Kim 1997, Park 2005, Ahn & Cho 2012, etc.), the discussions in this paper identify the existence of (at least) two distinct types of ellipsis constructions, which divulge depending on whether LF-copying or PF-deletion is employed.
