The purpose of this study was to examine the state of dance education provided by domestic and foreign theatres for the purpose of audience development, to make a comparative analysis of the domestic and foreign dance education programs, and ultimately to suggest some the right directions for the improvement of dance education programs by domestic theaters. Three domestic theaters and three foreign theaters were selected. The former was Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, the National Theatre of Korea and Daejeon Culture & Arts Center, and the latter was Sadler′s Wells, New York City Center and Joyce Theatre. The dance education programs of the domestic and foreign theatres were compared in terms of the accuracy of description on the objects of education, the diversity of learners and the diversity of educational form. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the foreign institutions of arts education sought after long-term objects of education such as the development of potential audience or the popularization of dance performances, whereas the domestic institutions didn′t mention the objects of education at all or presented short-term objects of education such as gaining personal experience.
Second, the foreign institutions of arts education selected people with particular needs such as senior citizens, people with disabilities or experts in dance as their learners, while the programs of the domestic institutions just targeted individual learners such preschoolers, adolescents of adults.
Third, the foreign institutions of arts education provided dance education in diverse forms such as lectures, narrative performances or tour-added courses, but the domestic institutions just conducted education in the form of lectures.
The findings of the study suggest that the domestic organizations should clearly set up the goals of education, offer education to more diverse people and conduct education in various forms. In addition, each institution should formulate its own specialty strategy in pursue of mutual coexistence and try to take the initiative in dance education to make a contribution to cultural welfare instead of merely focusing on the increase of the number of audience.
