The modern architectures which is the subject of this paper, can be defined as a element or spacial unit having organic physical and cultural characteristics, which reflects the historic context of an early modern and modern era in Korea. And because it is mostly situated on the old urban district and periphery, it can define a result of a synergistic relationship between urban history and spatial patterns through time.
The rapid redevelopment policy led by the Korean government from 1970s has dramatically weakened and destroyed the identities of cities and this phenomenon apparently tends to be found in the cities that were developed or regenerated during the modern times. However, as the advanced results of urban regeneration leveraging historic and cultural heritages have recently continued to appear, several varieties of development paradigms in the sense of social reform such as re-recognition of regional cultures, new urbanism campaign, revitalization of inner cities and urban regeneration have prevailed. Consequently, the vision on the beneficial management of modern architectures, which is an object of the paper, is also turned into a new aspect. In this regard, this paper will explore and specify executable measures for creative use of modern architectures distributed in the form of several patterns.
This paper is to explore a new paradigm for preservation and reuse of such modern architectures with focused on Urban Regeneration in Korea. The unique system of the modern architectures in Korea has been maintained in close connection with the regional environment, for some 100 years. Thus the modern architectures can be defined as the medium of past and future as it has changed through time. Therefore it is necessary that concern for the modern architectures should diversify and enlarge, and not concentrate solely on the oldfashioned elements. In terms of this concerns, this paper suggests the concept of beyond the time and the scope of building as practical concept in the urban regeneration. A series of phenomena are offering new opportunities for the coming decade. These include the increase of concern for the development of urban identity and attempts to change the regeneration method of general cities. Finally, the basic approaches for the reuse of modern architectures, able to use as valuable tools for urban regeneration, is suggested.
