Much research on speaking rate has been conducted from two perspectives: one is to examine the contextual, ethological, and socio-cultural factors that affect speaking rate, and the other is to investigate the effect of speaking rate on segmental production. However, the relation between speaking rate and prosodic features, such as tone, stress and global pitch trend, is far from being fully understood. This study examines the relation between speaking rate and global pitch trend in Mandarin Chinese by conducting an acoustic analysis of ten speakers’ production of Northern Wind and Sun (北?和太?) in two speaking rates: fast rate and slow rate. No significant correlation between the speaking rate and the global pitch trend realized in IP(intonational phrase) was found, and this result is consistent with the earlier findings on speaking rate and tone production (Gandour et al. 1999, 2002, Xu 1998). Results of this study suggest: (1) speaking rate affects segmental elements, such as vowel formants and VOT, to a larger degree and (2) suprasegmental elements including localized tone and global pitch trend are relatively more resistant to the influence of changing speaking rate.
