Passing through the elapsed time since Kori Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was constructed in 1978, Korea has established a world-class design, construction and safe operating techniques in the nuclear industry. During this period, nuclear industry has evolved dramatically and the NPP safety has been enhanced to accommodate the lessons learned from the catastrophic events such as the airplanes impact on World Trade Center and Pentagon and the tsunami disaster in the Fukushima NPP. Compare to cost and schedule, safety is and has always been the highest priority in NPP projects. The design of NPP structures has to satisfy special nuclear safety related regulatory and design standards requirements.
NPP structures can be classified as safety-related or nonsafety-related structures. The applied design codes and standards, such as but not limited to applied load types and load combinations, are significantly different between these structures. The design and construction of safety-related structures should be performed in accordance with special design codes and standards such as KEPIC SNB, KEPIC SNC, KEPIC SNG, etc. In addition, various safety-related regulatory requirements should be satisfied.
After the tsunami disaster of Fukushima NPP, the list of safetyrelated structures such as Reactor Containment Building (RCB), Auxiliary Building (AB), and Essential Service Water Intake Structure (ESWIS), has been expanded in order to improve the safety of NPP. Because of its unique characteristics, i.e. providing protections against radiation and pressure leakage, NPP structures are mainly consist of reinforced concrete or pre-stressed concrete. Under severe and extreme design and after the design-basis events, these structures have to maintain their structural integrity and able to function safely. Korea has played an important role in nuclear industry and is firmly committed to improve the safety of NPP structures.
