The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of expectancy-value on behavioral activation and inhibition and self-handicapping of middle school students in physical education classes. The subjects of this study consisted of 469 middle school students. The used instruments were the You & Park(201l) for measuring expectancy-value scale, the Choi & Huh(20l0) for measuring behavioral activation and inhibition scale, and the Hwang & Park(20l0) for measuring self-handicapping scale. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, multiple regression analysis, correlation analysis as a statistical method. The results of this study was as follows. First, expectancy/ability-related beliefs, internal interest, importance positively influenced positive class attitude. And both expectancy/ability-related beliefs and internal interest positively influenced friend relation. And expectancy/ability-related beliefs, importance, and utility positively influenced teacher behavior. And all sub-factors of expectancy/ability-related beliefs, internal interest, importance, and utility positively influenced emotion change. And both expectancy/ability-related beliefs and internal interest negatively influenced the lack of self-efficacy, but utility positively influenced. And expectancy/ability- related beliefs positively influenced punishment, but utility negatively influenced. And utility negatively influenced negative teacher’s attitude. And expectancy/ability-related beliefs positively influenced typical class structure. Second, internal interest negatively influenced self-handicapping. Third, teacher behavior positively influenced self-handicapping, but positive class attitude negatively influenced. And lack of self-efficacy positively influenced self-handicapping.
