The basic aim of the work described here is to suggest a prediction model for sound transmission loss of multi-layered panels based on the infinite panel theory. Since the usual concepts of random or field incidence in the sound transmission loss in these panels often result in a significant discrepancy from the experiments; our particular intention is to examine in detail the angular distribution of incident energy on sound transmission loss in multi-layered panels. As a consequence, our focus is finding a weighting function to represent the directional distribution of incident energy on the wall in an actual test environment. Numerical simulations by using a ray tracing technique are performed. Using the numerical results, the directional distribution of incident energy on the wall can be expressed by the Gaussian distribution in terms of the angle of incidence. This Gaussian function is confirmed from the fact that the compared results between the measurement and the prediction show good agreements for a variety of panel configurations. The main feature of this Gaussian function is that various panel configuration, especially multi-layered panel with and without porous materials in its cavity, can be handled effectively.
