This study examines discourse function of Mandarin Chinese “完了” and its educational use. As “完了” is re-analyzed as “V/完了” from “V完/了,” the phrase indicates the completion of an action or incident. After “V” is omitted, “完了” is grammaticalized as a conjunction and becomes an independent word, indicating the order of an action or accident occurred. In a conversation, “完了” is grammaticalized as a discourse marker indicating the cohesion of discourse. In this study, discourse function of “完了” is examined. “完了” has three functions. First, the word links two chronological incidents. Secondly, regardless of time sequence, the word links incidents to a discourse topic. Thirdly, the word “完了” is also used when a speaker attempts to go back to the previous topic in a given discourse. Korean speakers learning Chinese are not familiar with the third function. This study offers other discourse markers similar to “完了,” sets the order of discourse markers for pedagogical purpose in importance, and provides various practical examples to allow Chinese learners to acquire the discourse marker’s function.
